Speaker 1

00:00:21:09 - 00:00:46:27
Speaker 1
And today I'm talking about mindset and goal setting, right? That is the most important thing. If you want to reach any goal, you need the right habits, you need the right mindset. You need to be able to set goals. So let's jump right into it. So today, let's dive into what mindset is all about. Like if you think about what mindset is, it is a setting of the mind, which means if we can set it, we could turn it on and off, we can control it.
00:00:46:27 - 00:01:07:25
Speaker 1
Now, the problem is that most people don't take enough time to realize how do we control our mindset? And that's what we're going to dive into today. Because as much as I want to motivate you and drive you to execute the right strategies, what's better than motivation is habits and mindset. Because motivation will only take you so far.
00:01:08:02 - 00:01:29:18
Speaker 1
And as you are listening to this podcast or watching this, you probably can relate that your schedule as a college student is extremely busy, right? How do you balance between being a full time student? You know, either working part time on campus or off campus. Maybe you're doing an internship, maybe you're part of some student organizations or extracurricular activities.
00:01:30:00 - 00:01:51:06
Speaker 1
And on top of that, you want to apply for jobs. And that takes about 10 to 15 hours a week to do that correctly. How do you balance all that? Still have a friendship, being in a relationship and spend time with your family? That's a lot, right. And so what I want to talk about is how you create the right mindset and the right habits to be successful in all those categories.
00:01:51:06 - 00:02:16:27
Speaker 1
And the first thing you need to do is understand that it's about time management. And my biggest advice for time management is proper planning prevents poor performance. And so here's what I mean by that, right? We have a really busy schedule and we're trying to do everything at once. But do you ever slow down to plan? Right. It is said that for 10 minutes of planning you can save an hour worth of your time.
00:02:16:27 - 00:02:36:08
Speaker 1
So if you can set some time in the beginning of the week, maybe you spend one hour planning, you can save 6 hours, if not even more. So here's my advice to you. Right? It's about creating a calendar, utilizing your phone's calendar. I don't know how many of you use a phone calendar or even a real planner, but it's about proper planning.
00:02:36:08 - 00:02:56:07
Speaker 1
And what you want to do is that you want to start writing things down, treat yourself like a CEO, treat yourself like $1,000,000 brand, protect your time. Your time is the most valuable resource in the world. And so we want to make sure that you're getting the most out of it. So planning, right? So here's what I want you to do better, right?
00:02:56:12 - 00:03:16:02
Speaker 1
And then you want to create what's called an deal schedule. An ideal schedule. In your ideal schedule. What is that going to be? Is what your ideal week will look like and the goal is to put that in what your real schedule is and try to get to 75% for it to match. So how should you plan your ideal schedule?
00:03:16:06 - 00:03:37:20
Speaker 1
Well, number one, put your big rocks. What's your big rocks? What are your classes? Any work? If you work on certain days, put that in. Schedule time to study, schedule time to apply for jobs and networking. Schedule time for your extracurricular activities, and then leave some time on the weekends and nights hanging out with some friends and some family.
00:03:37:28 - 00:03:59:09
Speaker 1
Leave some time for you to put Netflix, schedule that into it too, and respect your time just like you wouldn't miss a doctor's appointment. You shouldn't be missing an appointment with yourself. If you said that you're going to go study during 3 to 5 p.m, then I need you to study from 3 to 5 p.m. If you say you're going to apply for jobs between 5 to 7 p.m, I need you to do that.
00:03:59:12 - 00:04:19:21
Speaker 1
Right. You know, don't, you're afraid of letting other people down, but are you not afraid of letting yourself down? And that's the key here. Proper planning prevents poor performance. Right. Now, the second thing, let’s talk about habits. Habits are really, really important. We want to build habits. Right. And it is said that it takes 21 days to build a habit.
00:04:19:22 - 00:04:39:09
Speaker 1
Now, one of my favorite books of all times is called Atomic Habits. And if this is something that you want to build on, I would recommend you read this book, Atomic Habit. And one of my favorite concepts about that book, it talks about getting better 1% out of every day. Don't try to double yourself or triple your productivity.
00:04:39:16 - 00:05:07:15
Speaker 1
Just focus on getting 1% better every day. And if you do that for a large amount of time, you will get dramatically better and you will beat everybody else. So trust me on this, focus and getting better 1%. And one of the things that we will talk about is creating the right habits, is about, If you're trying to build a new habit, the best way to incorporate a new habit into your routine, it's actually focused on adding it to a habit that you already do.
00:05:07:15 - 00:05:33:24
Speaker 1
Right. Let me ask you to think about this rhetorical question here. All right. As a major, thank you for listening to my podcast. I just let our career coaches know to open up their calendar for limited time only, limited spaces only to our loyal podcast listeners. So if you are currently a STEM student looking for a job in the next 90 days or graduate in the next year, and you want our help schedule a call with our team for free for a free strategy session.
00:05:33:24 - 00:05:50:20
Speaker 1
Limited time only. Link in the show notes. See you there. Do you have to really think through about brushing your teeth or do you automatically do that? Like, is there a routine when you wake up, you drink water or do you brush your teeth? Like, do you do things in a particular order? Right? You do same thing when you go to bed.
00:05:50:20 - 00:06:13:13
Speaker 1
You do things in a particular order. That's because that is your habit. Now, what I want you to do is to create new habits within those habits. It's called habit stacking, right? And so, for example, if you say, hey, you know what? For every episode I watch on Netflix, because maybe that's a habit that you already have. We have we have both good and bad habits already.
00:06:13:13 - 00:06:29:11
Speaker 1
Right. I'm going to say that if I'm watching this show on Netflix, I'm going to make a commitment to myself for every show I watch. This is 45 minutes long that you're going to then apply for jobs for 45 minutes. So then you would watch your show apply for 45 minutes, and then you would watch the show apply for 45 minutes.
00:06:29:21 - 00:06:48:06
Speaker 1
That way, you know, it's a trigger. You create a trigger, and then the show means you start doing the productive stuff. You start doing the things that are in your to do list, you start actually progressing right. The second thing I want you to make sure you understand about habits is that you never want to miss two days in a row.
00:06:48:06 - 00:07:07:06
Speaker 1
Look, we're always, always create creating habits like our body. The way we run our life is probably 99% worth of habits, the way that you put your shoes on. I think we talked about it before. And so what you want to do is understand that you're always creating habits, whether you intentionally do it or not. And so we want to make positive habits.
00:07:07:15 - 00:07:27:27
Speaker 1
So if we set a habit to apply to jobs one hour a day as an example. Right. And you had a really, really bad day. And that's going to happen. And you're going to have a day that you're going to miss it. I get it. Life throws you curveballs. I understand that. But what I want you to understand is that you should not, for any reason, miss two days in a row.
00:07:27:27 - 00:07:47:00
Speaker 1
Right? Because if you miss one day, fine. No problem. Because you've been doing it, you've been disciplined. But when you start missing and you miss a second day, what happens then is that now you're creating a habit of not applying for jobs but in the wrong direction. So if you miss it the first day, no problem. Cut yourself some slack.
00:07:47:06 - 00:08:13:09
Speaker 1
It's okay. Brush it off. No worries. But the next day, whatever you do, you have to be disciplined no matter what's going on. That way you start building it. Don't ever start building in the wrong way and you keep building in a positive way. So build it up. Keep a tally mark, because once you know you've been doing this for ten days in a row, it makes it harder for you to break that 11th day because, you know, you've already worked so hard.
00:08:13:13 - 00:08:36:22
Speaker 1
Now, last thing I want to say is mindset, right? Think about what mindset is the word mindset is studying of the mind. So I know it's about having a really positive mindset at the end of the day, and I want you to have it. But just know because of the word itself, you control this. So one of my best ways to control my mindset is to surround myself with people who have a strong mindset.
00:08:36:28 - 00:09:10:24
Speaker 1
We are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. So let's make sure that we are strategic about who it is. If there's people in your circle that are draining, that are negative, that are pessimistic, you need to minimize the time. Now, if you don't know right off the bat, people that are positive, like people who are futuristic, people that are talking about their goals versus talking about problems or other people, then surround yourself and watch influencers on YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn that are talking about positive things, right?
00:09:11:01 - 00:09:36:03
Speaker 1
The best way to reach any goal by far is to learn from someone who's done it. So surround yourself with it. Listen to books, write, listen to audiobooks, listen to podcasts like the one you're listening to right? Keep building and feeding your mind the right mindset. Because what happens is that that becomes your environment and then you start projecting that. Look, you’ve got this.
00:09:36:09 - 00:09:57:11
Speaker 1
Here's the thing, right? And I've been thinking a lot about this is like somebody asked me, Daniel, what percent of people graduating don't get a job? And I go think about it. And the reality is that I would say everybody who wants a job will get a job eventually. That's not the problem. The problem is that will you will you now get a job?
00:09:57:15 - 00:10:17:11
Speaker 1
You will get a job. The question is what job? Right. The question is, did you get a job that matches your full potential? And that becomes a different question, because I would say the majority of people do not get a job that matches their full potential. Right. You have a degree and you have let's say you have a software engineering degree, you will find a job.
00:10:17:28 - 00:10:38:22
Speaker 1
Whether, is it with a company that pays you this the right way? Is it with a team that you're growing and developing and you're enjoying the work and you're changing? Is it, you know, in the city and location that you want, all of those factors apply. And so I would say right, like it's all about the mindset and it's about surrounding yourself with people who have done it because you can do it too.
00:10:38:22 - 00:11:00:14
Speaker 1
So thank you. Look, if you're listening to this, I'm talking a lot about this because I've noticed a trend with a lot of my mentees that finding a job is a roller coaster. It is very, very difficult. There's a lot of ups and downs. And so we have to talk a lot about mindset, habits, goal setting, because if it starts here, then we can apply because I can give you all the strategies.
00:11:00:14 - 00:11:26:12
Speaker 1
You can listen to this show. We don't hold back on the strategies, but if we're not executing them, it doesn't matter. And the biggest reason for not executing is our is our mindset. And so we want to change that. So look, if you're enjoying this, if you've been if this is not the first time you've listened to this podcast and you're a return listener, I'll all I ask that you please leave us a review and just share this with any other job seeker that you know that can benefit from this.
